The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) — a digital border system that replaces manual passport stamping with biometric registration (fingerprints and a facial photo) for non-EU nationals — went live on April 10, 2026, and became fully operational across the Schengen Area from April 9, 2026, with some flexibility during the rollout period.
Any website offering ETIAS applications before the official launch is fraudulent.
ETIAS is coming, but not yet
Separately, ETIAS — a €20 digital travel authorization required in advance, similar to the US ESTA — is targeted for launch in Q4 2026 (October–December), for visitors from over 60 visa-free countries including the UK, US, and Australia. It will not become mandatory until roughly April 2027, after a six-month transition period. ETIAS depends on EES and cannot operate without it.
Watch for scam websites
As of mid-2026, ETIAS is not yet in effect. Any website offering ETIAS applications before the official launch is fraudulent — there is no legitimate way to apply before the system formally opens.

This affects anyone crossing an EU/Schengen external border, including workers on Poland pathways doing visa runs, family visits, or transit. It doesn't replace the need for a valid work visa or residence permit — EES/ETIAS govern border crossing and short-stay authorization, not work authorization. Be alert for scam websites already trying to charge for early ETIAS "applications" — there is no legitimate way to apply before the official launch.
