Poland has significantly reshaped how foreign nationals get legal to work in 2026, and the changes touch cost, process, and eligibility all at once. Anyone applying for or renewing work authorization this year needs to understand four separate shifts, each with its own effective date.

Legalization fees are up sharply
Since December 1, 2025, the government fees for legalizing foreign employment have risen by as much as 4x. The standard work permit fee climbed from 100 PLN to 400 PLN, and the fee for a permit covering a delegated worker rose to 800 PLN. Employers and candidates should budget for this upfront — it is no longer the negligible line item it used to be.
Paper applications are dead
Applications must now be filed exclusively through the government's praca.gov.pl portal. Paper submissions are rejected outright, with no exceptions. This makes digital readiness — correct account setup, complete scanned documentation, and accurate portal entries — a hard prerequisite rather than a nice-to-have.
New employer notification duty from March 2026
From March 5, 2026, every new employment contract involving a foreign worker — including Pole's Card holders, who were previously outside much of this scrutiny — must be reported to the local Labor Office (Powiatowy Urząd Pracy, or PUP) within 7 days of signing. Missing this window creates compliance risk for the employer and, by extension, uncertainty for the worker's legal status.
Student work exemption narrows in July 2026
From July 1, 2026, the long-standing exemption that let foreign students work without a permit gets narrower. Only students enrolled at universities on an official ministerial list will keep that exemption; everyone else will need to obtain a standard work permit like any other foreign worker.

Budget for higher legalization costs than in previous years, and confirm your employer is filing through the digital portal and meeting the new PUP notification deadline — paper paperwork or missed notifications can now stall a case that would previously have gone through without issue. Expect closer document scrutiny across the board, since the digital-only process leaves less room for informal fixes.
